Anthony Volpe is in a slump that has turned his breakout season into a statistically middling one. He also is in a lineup spot that has become customary, but his hold on batting leadoff appears to be slipping. He entered play 7-for-17 in his previous four games before going 0-for-4. Hes such a talented hitter, Boone said of Torres. Hes making as good swing decisions as he has in his career, but hes also mi sing on some pitches that hes historically done well [with] in his career. Since rising in the order, Volpes production has tanked. In his first 11 games of the season, in which he hit fifth, sixth or seventh, the 23-year-old hit .375 with a .444 OBP, showing off a revamped swing that helped him hit to all fields. At No. 1, Volpe does not have the same luxury. He has seen more strikes hitting leadoff because opponents are fearful of the hitters on deck.
